Francisco J. Esteva, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Esteva is a Professor in the Departments of Breast Medical Oncology and Molecular & Cellular Oncology at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Zaragoza School of Medicine in Spain. After receiving his MD degree Dr. Esteva moved to the US and completed his internship and residency at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center (Camden, NJ). He continued on to Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, DC) for a clinical fellowship in medical oncology. Dr. Esteva is board certified in medical oncology, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. His clinical research activities are centered on the development of targeted therapies for breast cancer, with a focus on the identification and validation of molecular prognostic and predictive markers. His laboratory identified several mechanisms of resistance to trastuzumab monoclonal antibody therapy, and he implemented clinical trials to overcome resistance in breast cancer patients. Dr. Esteva was awarded the K23 patient-oriented research career development award from the NCI in 1999. He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Southwest Oncology Group. He is an author of more than 100 publications in the area of breast cancer research and treatment.
